Kutub Uddin Ahmed, the father of the four brothers, was in the catering industry for almost 35 years. His restaurant, Noor Jahan was opened in the 1950s and was one of the first few Indian restaurants in London. The four brothers Saleh, Musleh, Muflay and Tufayel Ahmed decided to settle in the South West in the city of Bristol. They established their first restaurant, the well known British Raj, in 1982 before selling it almost 15 years later.
In 1997, the four brothers opened the Brunel Raj. The name of the restaurant compliments its location in Clifton Village. ‘Brunel’ came from the famous engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel who was best known for the creation of the Great Western Railway, the famous SS Great Britain and the world famous Clifton Suspension Bridge. The second name Raj, comes from the Sanskrit work rajan, which means ruler or king. The name ‘Brunel Raj’ thus translates to ‘King Brunel’, paying tribute to Bristol’s most well known merchant, Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
Since opening its doors over 10 years ago, Brunel Raj has received great publicity and praise from local press, along with a string of catering awards; including being listed in the Top UK Restaurants by Hardens in 2001 and 2003.
